Now more than ever it is very easy to get overwhelmed if you are trying to market yourself or brand online. Here is something that you may feel is out of the ordinary but it makes great sense. As a concert and event promoter, I learned very early on in my career from some of the best in the business, never promote to promote, you promote to make money. Now I apply this same philosophy to social media, don’t tweet to tweet, tweet to engage, don’t post to post, post to share what someone may find useful. The other philosophy if you we can call it that, as a promoter is, it takes the same amount of effort and time to produce a small event as a large event so pick the one with the greater return potential. The same applies to social media, concentrate on one platform first, build your followers, stay engaged. It is almost impossible to truly stay engaged on all platforms daily, so pick one, master it and I don’t mean for a week, I mean for 6 months, whether it’s instagram, twitter, facebook, myspace, vine, pick one and grow your followers. This will give you the opportunity to build yourself or brand with a very engaged audience, once you feel you have accomplished your goal move on to the next platform, until you have built a very diverse audience base.
Here is a great video that I feel really delivers the message on building a business. Many of us including myself like to multi-task and are constantly thinking of the great new idea, but if we slowed down for a minute we can actually be very successful.
